The purpose of this project and celebration is to celebrate the longest day of the year, the summer solstice, as it has been celebrated for centuries in Sweden.

It is our goal to provide a Midsummer experience that captures the historical and cultural significance of this centuries old event as celebrated in the Scandinavian culture. This includes the raising of the traditional majstång (or maypole) which is placed at the center of activity for the evening. A unique feature of Midsummer in Swedesburg is to honor an immigrant family. Descendants of the family are recognized as they carry the majstång to its place.

The entertainment will be provided by the Scandinavian Quartet, a group of young musicians from Sweden.

Midsummer generally attracts about 200 people of Swedish ancestry from surrounding communities throughout Southeastern Iowa including Ottumwa, Fairfield, Iowa City and Davenport. This event also attracts people who are not of Swedish ancestry, but wish to experience the traditions and culture found in folk music and activities.
