The Constitution Day national holiday commemorates the day in 1814 when the new Norwegian Constitution was signed. The constitution established Norway as a sovereign state and constitutional monarchy ruled by the principles of liberty and democracy. It was the most liberal constitution in Europe at that time, clearly inspired by the ideals of the revolutionary American and French constitutions.

Have fun like a Viking at Constitution Day Celebration! The Vikings had a great way to amuse themselves in their “down time” between warrior raids and working on their farms. They were fascinated with a strategic board game, similar to chess, that they called Hnefatafl [Nef-FAL-taf-fel]. They ended up spreading it around the world with friendly trade - and not-so-friendly invasions.

The chance to play that ancient Viking Chess game will highlight Detroit’s celebration of Norway’s most important holiday. The celebration takes place at the Swedish Club in Farmington Hills. On hand will be Joseph and Catie Hart of Ann Arbor, both accomplished Hnefatafl players, to teach it to anyone willing to exercise the most powerful muscle in the body—the brain.

For those who prefer their games on the field rather than the board, the lodge will host its popular Cod Toss tournament, throwing frozen fish for distance and fishy prizes.
We will also fly the Norwegian flag, sing the Norwegian national anthem, wear colorful “bunads”—Norway’s national dress—and enjoy Scandinavian music, picnic foods and desserts. This is a family-friendly event, with many games and activities for children.

A special event in the celebration this year will be a presentation by Norway’s Honorary Consul to Michigan, Dennis Flessland of Huntington Woods, of a diploma and medal to a military veteran of Norway living in the Detroit area. Mr. Holger Ekanger will receive this honor issued by Norway’s Defense Staff/Veteran Association for his participation 32 years ago in an international operation.
