Exhibition Talk: Conservatives and Revolutionaries in the late 19th Century Scandinavian Art World. The late 19th century was a period of rapid development in many parts of the worldnot least in Europe, and the field of art. The Industrial Revolution was making headlines, as was people traveling faster and more efficiently. Suddenly, the distance between Scandinavia and southern Europe was a lot shorter, and young artists were becoming increasingly aware of the more liberal art world in Paris. This only added fuel to their frustration with the conservative Academies in the North.
Join curator Carl-Johan Olsson on a journey from Scandinavia to France to learn more about what sparked the young artists' fury enough to lead them to organize a rebellion against their older colleagues. Get to know the wildest as well as the most diplomatic characters on both sides, and find out if France really was the answer to the young artists' prayersor if the North eventually lured them back, and if so, why?
This talk is given in conjunction with the Museum's newest exhibition, From Dawn to Dusk: Nordic Art from Swedens Nationalmuseum. |
