It is an honor to showcase this major exhibit that will occupy a space of 1,615 square feet in our office at Vasa Order of America National Archives, Bishop Hill, Illinois, USA.
During the month of June 2013 we will have an exhibit from the Ájtte-Swedish Mountain and Sami Museum,
crafts from the Sami Handicraft Foundation, and photos by Danish/American photographer Birgitte Aarestrup.
The Sami people are the indigenous ethic group in northern Europe.
The common denominator of these indigenous people is that they have lived in the same place, even before the country was invaded or colonized.
Sami history is shared globally and their issues are addressed at the United Nations permanent forum for indigenous people. The oldest traces of Sami culture are 8,000 years old and go back to the days when fishing and hunting were the main ways of life and culture, which later progressed to reindeer herding. One can still see traces of the past and many traditions persist, but some people lead a more modern life. The exhibit aims to show and tell how Sami people live today with stories about reindeer herding and handicraft.
