Welcome to the 24th season of the Mostly Nordic Chamber Music Series!

This season package offers the best value for music lovers who wish to join us for a delightful journey through the five Nordic countries of Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway, and Sweden. We are also thrilled to announce a new component to the Mostly Nordic series, Nordic Neighbors, with a focus this year on Latvia.

Nordic Museum is so pleased to host our full 2019 Mostly Nordic season in our new home at 2655 NW Market Street in downtown Ballard. Our state-of-the-art auditorium, Osberg Hall, has been receiving rave reviews from music performers and concert attendees alike, and we know you're going to love the custom acoustics our facility now offers. Please be sure to come by the Museum early to check out our wondeful core and visitng exhibitions, and grab a drink and bite to eat at our acclaimed cafe Freya.

2019 Mostly Nordic Season Schedule:

January 6 at 4 pm: FINLAND

Finnish Crossroads
With a smörgåsbord of more than ten instruments, including a variety of different kanteles, the trio Soittorasia opens our season with a program of music spanning the folk and classical traditions of Finland. They will demonstrate the versatile beauty of the ancient kantele instruments, the creation of which is celebrated in the Kalevala and is often imitated in other musical works.


February 10 at 2 pm: LATVIA

Peteris Vasks: A Composer Portrait
In conjunction with the Baltic Arts Northwest Council we reach beyond the Nordic borders to explore the music of today's most frequently-performed living Latvian composer, Peteris Vasks, with him in attendance. His lyricism, influenced by nature and Latvian folk music and characterized by a heartfelt directness and honesty, will be expressed through music for flute, string quartet and vocal ensemble, performed by Northwest artists, Paul Taub, the Skyros Quartet and the Mägi Ensemble.


March 17 at 4 pm: ICELAND

Afterquake
International prize-winning and “charismatic” cellist, Sæunn Thorsteinsdóttir returns to collaborate with “fascinating, enthralling, magnetic” pianist Angelo Rondello, who has performed extensively all over the world. With a program of works from the immense flourishing and creativity in new music written in the decade after the economic crash of 2008, they will perform compositions by contemporary Icelandic composers Jón Nordal, Páll Ragnar Pállsson and Þuríður Jónsdóttir.


April 14 at 5 pm: NORWAY

Ancient Melodies, Modern Harmonies
Ancient Norwegian stevtoner and folk songs meld with updated harmonies to create a timeless musical experience. Mostly Nordic favorite from Norway, Knut Erik Jensen returns to perform Klaus Egge's ethereal Piano Concerto No. 2 with the Seattle Philharmonic Strings under the direction of Adam Stern as well as Johan Kvandal's arrangements of stevtoner with soprano Laura Loge. The Seattle Philharmonic Strings will also perform works by Kvandal and his father, David Monrad Johansen, on the centennial of his birth.


May 5 at 4 pm: DENMARK
Danish Clarinet Trio and Ensemble MidtVest

Romantic Muse and Northern Spirit
The Danish Clarinet Trio, who are also members of Ensemble MidtVest, have performed widely throughout Europe and the Americas and highlight well-known established masterworks for clarinet trio and also lesser-known Danish works. For even more variety and richness, they add two other members of Ensemble MidtVest to perform music by Niels Gade, Clara Schumann, Per Nørgaard and Johannes Brahms.


June 9 at 4 pm: SWEDEN

Songs of the Heart
Scandinavian song specialist hailed as a “force of nature,” soprano Anna Hersey will perform art songs by Swedish Romantic composers de Frumerie, Stenhammer, Rangström and Nyström. At the piano will be Seattle Opera's principal coach and one of Seattle's best collaborative pianists, David McDade. Together they promise to woo you into this beautiful, rapturous repertoire.
