Swedish drama won international Emmy

Sveriges television (Swedish Television) won the international Emmy Prize for the Millenium series based on Stieg Larsson's best-selling trilogy, in the Best TV Movie-Mini series category.

  The Millenium series were awarded an international Emmy in New York recently. The series was directed by Niels Arden Oplev and Daniel Alfredson and produced by Yellow Bird in co-production with SVT, Nordisk Film, and ZDF Enterprises.

• MIllenium won international Emmy
  The award was given at the International Emmy's in New York, on November 21. The last time Sweden won the prestigious international recognition was in 1998 with Lars Molin's “The Tattooed Widow”. The acting duo Noomi Rapace and Michael Nyqvist playing the leads in the 6 x 90' “Millennium” films and TV series were Emmy nominated for Best Actress and Best Actor but lost respectively to UK actress Julie Walters (“MO”) and actor Christoffer Eccleston (“Accused”).

• The series, directed by Niels Arden Oplev and Daniel Alfredson, were produced by Yellow Bird in co-production with SVT, Nordisk Film, and ZDF Enterprises. Said director Daniel Alfredson: “I think of Noomi and Micke who are worth all the attention they can get, and I also think about Stieg Larsson and his books, which have led us all this way. It is still so incredibly sad that he cannot come with us on this journey.”

• Commenting on the International Emmy, Annie Wegelius, SVT head of Programming and Mikael Wallén, Managing Director at Yellow Bird said: "This is the world's finest television award. It is extremely gratifying and great to receive such recognition. It shows that we in Sweden have the ability to hold our own at an international competition. This puts the spotlight on Swedish drama production which gives us opportunities for the future." Next, look out for the American version of the Millenium series, starring Rooney Mara and Daniel Craig as Lisbet Salander and Mikael Blomkvist.
