How can I help?

A fair at American Swedish Historical Museum promotes broader awareness of the immediate needs of refugees

  • "Where the Children Sleep” by the Swedish award winning photographer Magnus Wennman, exhibits portraits of refugee children in Europe and the Middle East.
  • Opening on October 21 at the American Swedish Museum in Philadelphia are three complementary exhibits that build on the refugee theme: Portraits of Migration: Sweden Beyond the Headlines a series of 20 images that explore the stories of those who have found asylum in Sweden.
Better shelter on the museum’s lawn is a hands-on experience of the refugee shelter developed through funding by the IKEA Foundation in cooperation with UNHCR and
Magnus Wennman’s Where the Children Sleep, a series of 22 captivating photographs that document the tragic consequences of the refugee crisis. Wennman has captured what the simple act of bedtime brings for the youngest and most vulnerable refugees. Each photograph comes with captions by journalist Carina Bergfeldt of how these children and their families struggle through the Middle East and Europe while making the harrowing journey out of Syria.

  • Swedish photographer Magnus Wennman, winner of two World Press Photo Awards, has partnered with UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency to raise awareness about refugee children. His exhibit "Where Children Sleep" continues to travel around the U.S.
  • All three exhibits will be on view at ASHM through March. The exhibit opens with a day-long fair on Saturday, Oct. 21 at 11 a.m.-4 p.m., an education fair to connect people with the refugee community. Speakers share their personal experiences and refugee aid groups from the greater Philadelphia area will be on site to meet with members of the public and let you know how you can help with this, the most important human rights issue of our time.

  • Admission to the fair and the museum on this day will be free. For more info, call 215.389.1776 or see www.americanswedish.org
