Fotografiska comes to NYC

Hats on for a tour and hats off to a successful museum startup.

  • An expectant group of SACC New York members.
  • We toured the future home of Fotografiska in New York the other week, an event organized by SACC New York and led by Fotografiska’s CEO Jan Broman. The Fotografiska museum opened in Stockholm in 2010 in the Ferdinand Boberg-designed old royal customs house at Stadsgården, the quay along Söder’s north with a view over Strömmen to Gamla Stan and Skeppsholmen.

  • Jan Broman with SACC New York President Anna Throne-Holst.
  • The Fotografiska concept is an interesting combination of museum, destination and event space with a strong presence in the digital realm and an ever-changing contemporary and exciting content. The Stockholm institution has in short order become a leading photography destination welcoming exhibits by some of the world’s most prominent photographers and around 500,000 visitors every year.

  • Jan Broman answers questions inside the astonishing building, home to the New York Fotografiska museum.
  • The franchised New York branch in the Flatiron district of Manhattan will open at 281 Park Avenue South in February-March 2019. The 45,000-square-foot building, formerly known as the Church Mission House, will include café, bar and restaurant along with generous exhibition spaces. Careful renovations are under way in the unique six-story building, leased by Fotografiska New York in its entirety, which offers an outstanding amount of interior spaces, with high ceilings and abundant natural light throughout.
Fotografiska has been evaluating additional locations in Europe, the Americas and Asia for several years. Construction has commenced on a museum in the Whitechapel district of London and similar venues are in the planning stages for Lisbon and Shanghai in the not too distant future. The addition of future venues will likely enable the pooling of resources and collaboration over borders to keep the different museum locations virile.
