Madeleine’s new romance
Here’s proof that Princess Madeleine has gotten over… what was his name again? She shows her new love quite openly in New York. Last weekend the couple had brunch on the Boathouse in Central Park. “They couldn’t keep their hands off of each other,” said one of the restaurant owners. According to Expressen, Madeleine is not dating Swedish men to avoid rumors and unwanted attention. It’s been said that Jonas Bergström wants to reconcile with her, but Madeleine refuses to talk to him. And looking at the pictures from the Boathouse it seems she is over him. The man in question has yet to be identified.
Anteater baby born in Sweden
For the first time an anteater baby has been born in Sweden. Giant anteater couple Benita and Rozinski had a baby boy at Parken Zoo in Eskilstuna. The personnel there was a bit terrified since they had never experienced anything like it before. “Benita stood on top of the baby and began clawing at it the way she does when she opens an avocado,” says Zoo director Helena Olsson. Turned out that’s normal anteater behavior, as the loving mother was just removing fetus membranes from her baby. The baby will spend its first months sitting on his mother’s back, where it is well camouflaged. From there he will eventually begin his own excursions until he is independent. The giant anteater has no teeth but a long, sticky tongue with which it eats ants and termites. It is a solitary animal and can be easily awoken. When attacked it can defend itself with its sabre-like anterior claws. Anteaters normally live in South- and Central America.
Österberg might take over Social Democrats
The Social Democrats’ hunt for new party leader after resigning Mona Sahlin continues. One of the favorites at the moment is Sven-Erik Österberg, leader of the Social Democratic parliamentarian group and former deputy Minister for Finance. He says today that he would ‘consider it carefully’ if he got the question from the election committee.
School grades plunge in socially deprived areas
School results have dropped dramatically in Sweden's most socially deprived areas. This shows new figures from Statistics Sweden. Among pupils leaving primary school, usually nine out of ten are eligible for upper secondary education, but in socially deprived areas the same figure is seven out of ten. One of the worst examples is the city district Hovsjö in Södertälje, a suburban town west of Stockholm, where only 49.3% of the pupils are qualified for further education.
Fried Pork with Onion Sauce
Classic Swedish fare at its best - Stekt fläsk med löksås.
¾ lb (400 g) lightly salted side of pork
2 Tablespoons butter or margarine
2 finely chopped onions
2 cups milk
1/8 teaspoon salt
1/8 teaspoon white pepper
Cut the rind from the pork. Slice in smaller pieces if necessary. Place the pork in a cold frying pan, and place over heat. Reduce the heat when the fat begins to render. Fry 2-3 minutes on each side, depending on how crisp you would like the pork. Melt the butter in a saucepan over low heat. Sauté the onion in the fat. Remove saucepan from burner. Stir in the flour. Add all the milk at once. Replace on burner and bring to a boil, stirring constantly. Boil 3-5 minutes. Season with salt and pepper.
