    Want to discover how to trace your Swedish Roots or have you hit a brick wall and don’t know how to continue your research? Attend a Research Day with the SwedGen Road Tour 2011.

  • A group of renowned Swedish genealogists from Sweden are touring the United States in September for the sole purpose of helping Swedish-Americans to learn more about their roots and heritage. This will be the seventh SwedGen Tour. Previous tours visited British Columbia, California, Connecticut, Illinois, Massachusetts, Pennsylvania, Utah and Washington, D.C. On all these trips, the group was successful in helping many individuals get started with their research as well as breaking down many brick walls. This year the group will be making stops in Chicago, IL, Rock Island, IL, Denver, CO and Salt Lake City, UT.

  • In addition for the first time, three representatives from Lantmäteriet, the Swedish mapping and land registration authority, will be present at the SwedGen events in Chicago and Rock Island. At the time of this writing, it has not been finalized if Lantmäteriet representatives will make it to Denver or Salt Lake City. But if they don't make it one of the four Swedish genealogists will give a presentation on historical maps at those locations.

  • Charlotte Börjesson, genealogical researcher, board member with the Computer Genealogy Society of Sweden (DIS)

  • The Research Day will include presentations and demonstrations on how to use online genealogical resources; information on how use Swedish resources such as the church books, tax registers and probate records to traces one’s Swedish roots plus a presentation and demonstration on how to find historical maps showing where your ancestor originated from in Sweden.

  • Anna-Lena Hultman, genealogical researcher, one of the key persons in the development of the Emibas CD, a CD with information on more than 1.1 million emigrants leaving Sweden between 1845 and 1930.

The registration procedures do vary by place and pre-registration is required in Chicago, Rock Island and Denver. At each place, individual consultations will be available to the first 32 persons who sign up for a one-on-one session and submit a query form.

  • Already in 1628, King Gustav II Adolf instructed the mathematician and cartographer Andreas Bureus to begin the systematic mapping of Swedish villages, focussing on land owned by peasants, for taxation purposes.

  • Meet the SwedGen Tour 2011 Group:


    The SwedGen Tour Group includes four Swedish genealogists and representatives from Lantmäteriet. The four genealogists are Anneli Andersson, Gunilla Didriksson, Charlotte Börjesson and Anna-Lena Hultman. Americans. Below are the bios for these four individuals and information about Lantmäteriet.

  • The maps were collected in bound volumes called land books (“geometriska jordeböcker”) and were placed in the central archives (Land Survey Board Archive) in Stockholm. Lantmäteriet today possess a unique and invaluable collection of historical maps.

  • Anneli Andersson has been doing genealogical research since 1988, and has worked at the Mellerud museum and genealogy archive for nearly 20 years. At the archive, she assists visitors with their research and teaches genealogy classes. Anneli is experienced in helping North Americans to find their Swedish roots, and has assisted them in locating where their ancestors lived and where they are buried. Anneli has been a participant in the SwedGen Tours since 2002.

  • Gunilla Didriksson is participating for the first time in a SwedGen Tour. She was born in Ramsberg parish, but now lives in Lindesberg, with almost all her roots among the miners and famers in the western and northern Västmanland, Örebro county. She has been since 1995 a member of the Linde Bergslags Genealogical Society and has been its chairman for five years. She is a board member of The Federation of Swedish Genealogical Societies and is responsible for the Roots Bookstore.

  • Charlotte Börjesson has been doing genealogical research for more than 15 years and has deep experience with both Swedish and American resources. She is a board member with the Computer Genealogy Society of Sweden (DIS) and her areas of expertise include research within in western Sweden as well as computer genealogical research and photography. Charlotte has participated in SwedGen Tours since 2002.

  • Anna-Lena Hultman has been doing genealogical research for more than 35 years and is well-known as an expert on emigration research. Her home province is Västergötland. She was one of the key persons in the development of the Emibas CD, a CD with information on more than 1.1 million emigrants leaving Sweden between 1845 and 1930. She also guides many North Americans during the summer months in locating their ancestors’ homesteads. Anna-Lena has been a participant in all the SwedGen Tours.

  • Lantmäteriet –Representatives from the Swedish mapping, cadastral and land registration authority will be touring with SwedGen for the first time. Lantmäteriet has been engaged in the mapping of Sweden since 1628 and still produces standard maps such as the Road Map, the Topographic Map, the Mountain Map, the Property Map and a Map of Sweden. The Historical Maps website is a presentation of large parts of Lantmäteriet’s unique and invaluable collection of historical maps. The collection comprises more than a million maps from all parts of Sweden! The following persons will be representing Lantmäteriet: Birgitta Eriksson, Bengt-Olof Käck and Lennart Sundström.

  • The group will be accompanied by renowned Swedish/U.S. genealogist Kathy Meade.
