The death of the 'lakritspipa'

The EU directives that (in general for good reason!) are targeting tobacco-like candy and toys may well bring about the death of the Swedish licorice pipe.

  The sweet licorice pipe, a popular candy in Sweden, might soon be banned by EU, just like other candy and toys that look like tobacco products.

• Candy and toys that look like tobacco products won’t be allowed if a new tobacco directive in the EU passes, and takes effect in a few years. Such a directive may be the death blow to the beloved Swedish ”lakritspipa”, licorice pipe, and it is creating a little debate on whether or not the EU is a bit too meddlesome.
  ”The licorice pipe is probably a borderline case and I think it is a little silly, but it is not silly to prevent tobacco companies to promote themselves secretly in the children’s public spaces,” says Swedish politician (the Green Party) and Member of the European Parliament Carl Schlyter.
  The EU ban on candy and toys that look like tobacco products have long existed but were not binding on member states. A vote inn September, determines whether it should be mandatory. The popular Swedish candy has been around since the 1920s. Maybe it's time for a licorice pipe lobby?
