New Danish law passed

Denmark passed a new law on June 24, which means all foreigners that have been sentenced to prison will be deported.

  • 97 members of the Folketing (the national parliament of Denmark) supported the law proposal, only 7 members voted against it. So far deportation in Denmark has only been used in circumstances when immigrants have committed serious crimes such as murders, manslaughter or rape.

  • The new law means all crimes punishable with prison, no matter how “light”, will be followed by deportation. Family situations may not be taken into account. The decision is with the court. The decision may be cancelled if it goes completely against international conventions about human rights.
