New Swedish ambassador to the U.S.

A press release from the Swedish Ministry for Foreign Affairs of May 2 names diplomat Björn Lyrvall as new ambassador to the United States as of fall, 2013.

  • New Swedish ambassador to the U.S.
    The Swedish government appointed Bjorn Lyvall to ambassador to the United States of America on May 2, 2013. Mr Lyrvall is currently Ambassador and Director-General for Political Affairs.

  • Björn Lyrvall has served as Vice-Consul in Leningrad (later St. Petersburg) and was regional manager for the Swedish Trade Council in the then Soviet Union. He has also held positions in the Swedish embassies in Moscow and London. In addition, he was assistant to Carl Bildt in the latter's capacity as special envoy in the Balkans. Mr Lyrvall has served at the Ministry for Foreign Affairs Department for Eastern Europe and Central Asia, and at the Permanent Representation to the EU in Brussels, where he was responsible for enlargement negotiations. He also represented Sweden on the Political and Security Committee (PSC).

  • Mr. Lyrvall will take up his new position in autumn 2013. He succeeds Jonas Hafström after five years in Washington D.C., earlier ambassador to Thailand.
