Where marriages last the longest

..not surprisingly, it is not in Sweden's capital.

  • Marriage isn’t an easy affair. In Sweden the average length of a marriage is 25 years. The longest ones can be found in the north, in Överkalix (50 years on average).
  • Over 23,000 marriages ended in divorce in Sweden last year, after an average duration of 11 years. But the difference in the length of marriages varies widely depending on where in Sweden you live. In Överkalix, for instance, the average marriage lasts 50 years, but that number includes the death of a partner.

  • In Botkyrka, on the other hand, the average marriage lasts no longer than 15 years, according to fresh data from Statistics Sweden. The place in which it is hardest to keep a marriage going is without doubt Stockholm; nine of Stockholm’s ten municipalities can be found at the bottom of the list with divorce statistics. The number of divorces has been stable at around 20,000 since 1974. Taking into account both divorce and death, the average Swedish marriage lasts 25 years.
