Swedish Oscars 2014

The most important Swedish film award, equivalent to the Oscar was recently awarded.

  • "Återträffen" (The Reunion) won the Guldbagge Award for best Best Film. A not uncommon theme, but this reunion turns into a game of hierarchies, power and games, and one of the greatest sadistic joys: Falsely making somebody believe you're in love with her. The first half of the film centers on the reunion party, which is a humiliating disaster for Anna (played by Odell). In the second part, she confronts some people from her class.

It is kind of ugly, isn't it, the Guldbaggen? The Swedish equivalent to the Oscar is nevertheless the most important Swedish film award, and recently the award ceremony took place. As predicted, the popular film about singer Monica Zetterlund, ”Monica Z,” took home most awards, but newcomer Anna Odell was also awarded. Here’s a short list of the winners:
Best Film: ”Återträffen” (directed by Anna Odell)
Best Director: Per Fly (for ”Monica Z”)
Best Script: Anna Odell for ”Återträffen”
Best Actress: Edda Magnason in ”Monica Z”
Best Actor: Mikael Persbrandt in ”Mig äger ingen”
Best Supporting Actress: Anna Bjelkerud in ”Hotell”
Best Supporting Actor: Sverrir Gudnason in ”Monica Z”
The Guldbagge Award is an official Swedish film award awarded annually since 1964 by the Swedish Film Institute. The prize itself, a small statue in the shape of a beetle, is made from copper which is enamelled and gilded. It was designed by the artist Karl Axel Pehrson. An inscription of the name of the award's winner, and the category in question, is glued to the underside of the beetle.

  • Best Actress at 'the Swedish Oscars': Edda Magnason in ”Monica Z” (above in character). Magnason received standing ovations at the Guldbagge ceremony in Stockholm.
  • Best Actor: Mikael Persbrandt in ”Mig äger ingen.” "I'd like to share this (award) with all addicts suffering in the cold today," Persbrandt said upon receiving the award.
  • Guldbaggen—the Swedish "Oscar."
