The film festival in Cannes opened to the tragic news of Malik Bendjelloul’s death. ”It’s incredibly sad,” said Nicole Kidman, who is in Cannes to launch her film ”Grace of Monaco”. Tim Roth, from the same film, agreed. And Mexican movie star Gael García Bernal said: ”It’s extremely tragic. I met him briefly during the Oscar’s last year. He was a great filmmaker. Tragic that is should end this way.”
The Svenska Filminstitutet has a delegation in Cannes, and is planning on honoring Bendjelloul at the festival by a special screening of ”Searching for Sugar Man” on May 18.
