.. and decides to keep her earlier name, not adding O'Neill. Disappointing news for Swedes, no doubt, but it was Princess Madeleine’s choice to make and now it’s out in the open: Her wedding-gown is designed by Italian Valentino. Most Swedes would have liked to see Madeleine in a gown by a Swedish designer (her sister Crown Princess Victoria wore one designed by Pär Engsheden).
According to Expressen, Madeleine got help from friends Louise Gottlieb, Emma Pernald (Prince Carl Philip’s former girlfriend), Katarina von Horn, Ellen Dinkelspiel, and Charlotte Cederlund in finding the perfect gown for her wedding. Fashion expert at the newspaper Expressen, Emma Danielsson, is not surprised by Madeleine’s pick: “If there’s anyone who can design beautiful and enormous gowns, it’s Valentino. I predict a whole lot of lace, and a fairly detailed dream gown, worthy of a princess.”

  • Also Princess Madeleine will not be called “Madeleine O’Neill” following the wedding, but will keep her name the way it is – Madeleine, Thérèse Amelie Josephine Bernadotte. The application to the tax office, which was received in Mid-May, states that the princess has decided not to add O’Neill.
Says Director of the Information and Press Department at the Royal Court Bertil Ternert: “It’s her decision and I have no comment.” However, for a Swedish princess it is a rather unusual move. According to royal expert Sten Hedman, both Princess Birgitta and Princess Margaretha added their husbands’ last names after they got married. “Perhaps it is a way (for Princess Madeleine) to mark her presence in Sweden. She wants to show that she is a Swedish princess, and I think she does so in quite a cute way,” Hedman says.
