  • Rain and thunderstorms hit Sweden.
The island of Gotland in the Baltic Sea was hit worst by severe thunderstorms yesterday and was, as a result, without electricity for several hours. The bad weather that was passing through southern Sweden, began already Saturday, July 16, with heavy rains. In the Ronneby area (in Blekinge), several basements were flooded. “We probably got 40 mm (over 1.5 inches) rain in half an hour,” says Torbjörn Svensson, Chief Firefighter at Östra Blekinge’s Rescue Service. Worst hit was Gotland; the entire island was hit by thunderstorms, about 37 000 homes were without electricity, and several homes were flooded.
