Swedish police to learn Arabic
Police in Rosengaard, Malmo (the district in Malmo with a large group of immigrants, especially from the Middle East) are signing up for lessons in Arabic. The idea is to learn basic greeting and courtesy phrases. The initiative comes from the police themselves, and 45 police have already registered. “It’s about greeting residents in a more dignified and somewhat more polite way,” says Bengt Hersler, a police officer in Rosengård.
“As-salaam Alaykum” (peace be upon you) is a good way to greet your Arab friend. It is most likely one of the phrases the policemen in the Rosengård district in Malmö will be learning, as they are registering for Arabic lessons. Here is a chart with other Arabic words for beginners.
