In the (near?) future it might be possible to order alcohol online and get it delivered to your door by Systembolaget (the government owned chain of liquor stores in Sweden and the only retail store allowed to sell alcoholic beverages containing more than 3.5% alcohol by volume).

  • “We’re now looking into the possibilities in offering home deliveries,” says Magdalena Gerger, Managing Director at Systembolaget. The idea is that the entire selection is to be available for customers with the addition of a smaller fee.

  • but Socialutskottet’s Lena Hallengren is critical, she believes home delivery might lead to increased consumption.
  • “Our way of shopping has changed the past few years, so it is only natural that our customers should get advice and be able to shop both in a store and online,” Gerger continues. The same rules will apply for home deliveries as in the store: No alcohol is ever sold to minors, drunks or those suspected for passing on alcohol to minors.

  • “It’s important for us to keep the public’s confidence in what we do, so we keep developing our service and we keep trying to limit the negative effects of alcohol.” However, Lena Hallengren, Social Democratic Managing Director for Socialutskottet is critical: “For me it is important that we don’t expand the hours of activity so that we add to an increased consumption. And we know that easier access leads to increased consumption.”
