Normally, there is one woman per every nine men studying at the basic military training (GMU or grundläggande militär utbildning in Swedish). But according to Sveriges Radio Gävleborg, this summer every third participant is a female.
Lieutenant-colonel Lars-Gunnar Olsson, director for the home defense in Göteborg and Sjuhärad, believes the higher numbers are due to the season.
“It’s the only logical explanation,” he says. “I haven’t seen as many women anywhere in the country during the entire year.” The GMU-education replaced compulsory military service in Sweden two years ago.
