January 16 in Swedish History
1936: Solstickan, the Swedish charity foundation, is founded on January 16 in 1936. Its goal is to aid children in need, and its ruling board is appointed by the Swedish government. The money for the foundation comes through the sales of the Solstickan matchbox, which over the years has become the most well-known and purchased matchbox in Sweden.

The artwork on top of the matchbox was made in 1936 by the artist Einar Nerman (1888-1983) and is a painting of his own son. Today, the money from the Solstickan foundation goes mostly to science and research in child diseases.
