Fewer refugees in 'blue' municipalities

And 'blue' in Sweden is [politically] just the opposite of blue in the United States.

  • The municipalities governed by the ruling Alliance (in Sweden considered blue, blue and red areas refer to just the opposite of what they do in the United States) take on fewer refugees than those municipalities governed by the Social Democrats and the Left Party. This according to a survey conducted by Swedish Television.
    Among the 50 municipalities that received the least number of refugees in comparison to the population, 39 were governed by the Alliance, and only two by the Social Democrats and the Left Party. Others had a mixed governance or changed governance during the electoral periods. During the years 2006 to 2013, Sweden received an average of 18 refugees per 1,000 inhabitants. The average in municipalities run by the Alliance was 13 refugees per 1,000, while the Red-Green areas averaged nearly twice as many. Sorsele, Södertälje, and Lessebo top the list of the municipalities that receive the highest number of refugees, while Öckerö, Klippan, and Lekeberg are among those that receive the fewest.

    As always, it deserves to be mentioned that statistics do cover a limited area; no consideration was made to the difference in available suitable apartments or service institutions. Öckerö, for instance, is an island with less than 3,500 inhabitants on Sweden's west coast while Södertälje, near Stockholm, is an urban center with a population of over 80,000.
    Also, for a municipality such as Sorsele to receive 26 refugees per 1,000 inhabitants would mean they received a total of 33 during the aforementioned period. Södertälje on the other hand received several thousand refugees and has for instance the largest Assyrian population in Europe, well established and assimilated since the 1960s and 70s - the Assyriska soccer club from the town is currently playing in the second highest Swedish league, Superettan.
