September 11 in Swedish history

America's love for Jenny Lind began with her first U.S. concert.

  • "The Swedish Nightingale" Jenny Lind was born in Sweden in 1820 and performed for the first time in America on Sept. 11, 1850.
  • On this date in 1850, Jenny Lind sang her first U.S. concert. Lind, born Johanna Maria Lind (1820-1887) in Stockholm, was an opera singer known also as the "Swedish Nightingale." She became one of the most highly regarded singers of the 19th century, joining showman P.T. Barnum in an incredibly popular tour in the United States, which began on September 11, 1850. She was respected and loved so much that “Lind mania” erupted everywhere, spreading to clothing, points of interest and eventually scholarships, memorial and even furniture — most notably the cottage-style spindled furniture, especially Jenny Lind cribs and beds.
