"For my wife and me, this is a great day full of emotion," Carl Philip said following the birth of the baby, their first, who is fifth in line to the Swedish throne. The palace announced that both Princess Sofia, 31, and her new son were in good health. A name is expected to be announced at the Te Deum thanksgiving service at the Royal Chapel on Friday, April 21.

King Carl XVI Gustaf had to cancel plans to speak at a school in Halmstad — for the unprecedented second time due to the birth of a grandchild. Queen Silvia was in New York delivering a speech to the United Nations when their grandchild, the fifth, was born. "I'm so happy, really. All is well, and both Princess Sofia and the baby are doing well. I'm walking on clouds!"

According to tradition, the King held a cabinet meeting per Chapter 5, Section 3 of the Constitution, and publicly announced the title, name, first name and dukedom of the new royal baby:
He is HRH Prince Alexander Erik Hubertus Bertil, Duke of Södermanland.
His given name is Alexander.

Södermanland has had several dukes since the 1700s. It is a diverse county with lakes, forests , agriculture, small and medium-sized towns and island, on the east coast near Stockholm. The provincial flower is the white water lily and provincial animal is the osprey.

The new prince is very close in age to his cousins — Prince Oscar was born to Crown Princess Victoria on March 2, and Prince Nicolas, son of Princess Madeleine, is still a couple months away from his first birthday; Estelle is 4 and Leonore is 2.
