National Day celebrations in the U.S.

Swedish celebrations from sea to shining sea: 'Nationaldagsfiranden' across America

  • On June 6, Swedes are celebrating the nation's National Day – at least trying to!
  • Nationaldags Firande 2016
Until the 1890s when Artur Hazelius recognized a need to celebrate spring and identified June 6 as the date to do so, Sweden was for many years the only country in the world with no official national day (although it’s always been known for having more national flags flying than just about any country in the world). Recognized as the day Gustav Vasa was elected king (in 1523), June 6 was also relatively recently given the distinction as the Day of the Swedish Flag. And now it's enjoyed with food and celebrations around Swedish America, Sweden, and especially at Skansen, its birthplace in Stockholm.
