There will be no 2018 Nobel Prize in Literature.

  • The Swedish Academy, which awards the Nobel Prize in Literature, is not naming a laureate this year. This announcement comes as a result of the sexual abuse scandal and financial impropriety that engulfed the group in recent weeks, a situation “that is so serious that a prize decision will not be perceived as credible,” said Carl-Henrik Heldin, chairman of the Nobel Foundation, citing official reasons an award can be skipped or postponed. The academy will focus on rebuilding its 18-member jury and recovering public confidence but will name two winners in 2019. This is the first year since World War II the Swedish Academy has decided not to bestow one of the world’s most revered cultural honors, awarded since its creation in 1901. It is the only Nobel Prize affected by this decision.
