Lucia morning in Sweden

Almost every town, every school and many families in Sweden will celebrate with its own Lucia in the morning of Dec. 13.

  • The Lucia celebration is something that Swedes themselves, and also the rest of the world consider as the most typical Swedish tradition. Read more about the tradition here, Swedish Lucia, the Queen of Light or get in the right mood by watching our 3-minute video clip from the Lucia celebration in Boston 2011: www.nordstjernan.com/video/

  • Two years ago all the traditional Christmas songs were performed and broadcast from the Uppsala Domkyrka (Cathedral) Photo: Niklas Ahlgren/SVT
  • Swedish television will broadcast from Oscar Fredriks Kyrka in Göteborg early in the morning on Dec. 13 and - unless your own daughter wakes you up as Lucia with coffee, saffron buns and gingerbread cookies - a majority of Swedes will tune into the celebration and music, which is broadcast live on TV.

  • The live broadcast at 7 a.m. (1 a.m. EST) on Dec. 13 should be available at www.svt.se/lucia/ and later at www.svtplay.se

  • If you're not able to watch, here's an earlier Lucia from Linköping Cathedral: Lucia i Linköpings domkyrka 2003 or here, a celebration from Stockholm beginning with the classic Lucia song: Lucia 2010 Sthlm, Kungsholms kyrka, Södra Latin Kammarkör

  • Glad Lucia morning wishes you Nordstjernan
