New Nordic Virtual Cinema at Scandinavia House continues from March 5 through 11 with the film Uncle /Onkle (Denmark, 2019; dir. Frelle Petersen). Kris lives on a derelict farm in a small Danish town that she runs with her disabled uncle, with a quirky but loving relationship filled with daily routines and moments of comfortable silence. But when one day she miraculously saves the life of a newborn calf, her dream of becoming a veterinarian — which she had put on hold to care for her uncle — is rekindled. In pursuit of her studies, she develops a friendship with the chatty veterinarian Johannes, and begins to branch out into the world beyond her small farm. But her overprotective nature towards her uncle, and her heavy workload in maintaining their farm, continue to get in the way of her blossoming new life.

A beautiful exploration of small-town Danish life that is both stunningly picturesque and quaintly endearing in its navigation of young love and complicated relationships, Uncle has been acclaimed as “a film of revelatory detail (ScreenDaily) and a “quite exquisite slice of humanity” (Cineurope). Winner of the Tokyo Grand Prix Best Film, 2020 Tokyo International Film Festival; Official Selection, 2020 Tallinn Black Nights and Göteborg film festivals. Directed by Frelle Petersen (105 min. In Danish with English subtitles).

New Nordic Cinema continues through May; check back to the site and our newsletter to see more films as they are added.
