The Square at the Oscars

Ruben Östlund's latest movie among the five selected to compete about Best Foreign Film at tonight's Oscars.

• Since winning the Golden Palm in Cannes The Square has won numerous prizes around the world, including six European Film Awards in December. It recently became the Golden Globe nominee and several of the film's nominations and prizes come from American film critics organizations. Ruben Östlund's latest movie is now among the five selected to compete about Best Foreign Film at the 90th Academy Awards, the Oscars tonight.

  Ruben Östlund's The Square, earlier awarded the Palme d'Or in Cannes, is Sweden's submission for Best Foreign Language Film at the Oscars.

• Östlund's film competes with A Fantastic Woman from Chile, The Insult from Lebanon, Loveless from Russia, and On Body and Soul from Hungary.

• The Square is Ruben Östlund's first Oscars nomination. He recently won a Golden Beetle (Guldbagge = Sweden's Oscar equivalent) for Best Direction and Fredrik Wenzel who filmedThe Square won for Best Cinematography. Official trailer for The Square

• This is the second consecutive year a Swedish movie has been elected and the sixteenth Academy Award nomination for Sweden. Last year's blockbuster, A Man Called Ove, directed by Hannes Holm and based on the bestselling book with the same name was last year's contender. Ingmar Bergman, who's celebrated the world over The Year of Bergman 2018 this year won twice, in 1983 for Fanny and Alexander and in 1961 for Through a Glass Darkly.
