Volvo Cars has opened its first U.S. plant

Volvo Cars opened its new U.S. plant with the unveiling of its new S60 luxury sedan.

  • Volvo began importing cars to the U.S. in 1955. Sixty-three years later the company has opened its first American factory in South Carolina - producing, selling and exporting 100,000 latest generation Volvo cars annually.
  • The new Charleston, South Carolina plant, which opened June 20, is the company’s first American manufacturing facility; it reinforces Volvo Cars’ commitment to the U.S., an important market for the company and the new S60, the first Volvo car made in the United States and the first Volvo car to be sold without a diesel engine.

  • Employees look forward to revealing the car they have built, the new Volvo S60, on the first U.S. Volvo Car plant's opening day.
  • "The new S60 is one of the most exciting Volvo cars we’ve ever made,” said Håkan Samuelsson, president and CEO of Volvo Cars. “It is a true driver’s car that gives us a strong position in the U.S. and China sedan markets, creating more growth opportunities for Volvo Cars.” Sticker price starts at $35,800.
