'Förenta Staternas Nationalsång'

Nordstjernan, Fredagen den 5 Juli 1912

  • The American National Anthem in Swedish
Nordstjernan, Fredagen den 5 Juli 1912: the bulk of the readership of America's Swedish newspaper was comprised of persons who spoke Swedish fluently, and furthermore, bought Nordstjernan on newsstands. The appeal to them was news from their homeland, and the front page was still exclusively dedicated to items from Stockholm and, in small paragraphs, encapsulated news from varying Swedish cities and Provinces.

  • On the other hand, it became evident by pieces, such as this on page 4 of this issue - a Swedish translation of the United States’ National Anthem for Nordstjernan’s readers - that they considered themselves Americans first, and of secondary significance was loyalty to Sweden. Nevertheless, lengthy notices of inheritances left for Swedes in America continued to appear, in small type, along with attempts by relatives in Sweden to trace their lost American family members.
