  • Sweden took eleven medals at the 2016 Summer Olympics; two gold, six silver, three bronze. Swimmer Sarah Sjöström secured Sweden's first gold in Rio, winning in the 100-meter butterfly. It was Sweden’s first ever Olympic gold medal in women’s swimming and Sjöström’s first, of any color, in what is her third Games. Swedish cyclist Emma Johansson had earlier the same day taken silver in the women's 137-k road race. This was Johansson’s second Olympic silver, having previously finished second at the Beijing Games in 2008. Sarah Sjöström then took silver in the women’s 200m freestyle final. The gold went to Katie Ledecky of the U.S., bronze to Australian Emma McKeon. Later in the week Sjöström secured Sweden's fourth medal by taking bronze in the women's 100 meter freestyle.
Marcus Svensson took silver in skeet. Henrik Stenson a silver in golf where Stenson and Justin Rose dueled until the very last hole when the Brit finished with a birdie while Stenson ended up with a bogey.

  • Sweden's men's and women's football teams were off to a bad start, with both having a draw or losing in their first games. The men's team lost to Nigeria and Japan in their group and did not qualify for the quarterfinals. The women's team was thrashed 5-1 by hosts Brazil when they first met in the group but a win over South Africa and a draw against China secured a spot among the quarterfinalists. A win over the U.S. team in the quarterfinals brought Sweden back to meet the Brazilian women in the semifinals on August 16, which Sweden won 4-3 in the shootout.
Two bronze medals to the two women wrestlers Jenny Fransson and Sofia Mattsson rounded off the medals prior to the soccer final where Sweden lost 2-1 to Germany and brought home a silver medal to Sweden. Then, on the next to final day of the olympics, Jenny Rissveds took the gold in cycling; women's mountain bike.
