Many Swedes skip holiday trips.

Then again, with an average of 33 paid vacation days, not counting public holidays, maybe you won't need to make the trips...

  • Fewer Swedes go on vacation trips, and of those who don't, most are single.
  • Last year Swedes took shorter vacations than usual; 41% of all men and 44% of all women didn’t go away on their usual weeklong vacation trip. According to numbers from Statistiska Centralbyrån (Statistics Sweden), every fifth man and every fourth woman did not go away for vacation, nor did they have access to a summer house. Going away for vacation is more common among families than it is for single Swedes.

  • Although fewer take the traditional full five-week summer vacation, Sweden is still at the top of global vacation rankings. (Five weeks in the summer used to be the norm in Sweden, with companies closing down for a period. Up until the 1990s, the first day of vacations was a national news event, with TV teams waiting outside big industries, asking how workers planned to spend their time off...)
