Raccoons and raccoon dogs.

The Swedish ecosystem will soon be expanded by two, not so longed for, new mammals.

  • The raccoon (“tvättbjörn” in Swedish) and the raccoon dog (“mårdhund”), soon to be seen in Sweden? The raccoon, which is native to North America, is a medium-sized, nocturnal and omnivorous mammal.
  • Coming to Sweden: Raccoons and raccoon dogs
The Swedish ecosystem will soon be expanded by two new mammals: The raccoon and the raccoon dog will find their way to us over the sound. The raccoon has already made himself at home in Denmark. Many might think it’s lovely with new animals, especially animals as cute as these two, but there’s a problem with invasive breeds and these are invasive. The raccoon dog may cause damages in the Swedish wetlands and impair the chances for birds and frogs, while the raccoon, which is native to North America, likes to live in cities to the annoyance of many people. Swedish authorities are doing what they can to prevent the animals to move in, but it is most certainly just a matter of time.
