Better educated immigrants to Sweden

The level of education among people immigrating to Sweden is rising.

  • Immigrants to Sweden arrive with a higher education today compared to ever before.
  • Immigrants more educated
The level of education among people immigrating to Sweden is rising, and it applies to immigrants from all over the world—except the European Union countries, according to fresh statistics from SCB (Statistics Sweden). SCB has mapped out the level of education among people born in Sweden and has come to the conclusion that almost as many foreign-born as Sweden-born people have a post-secondary education, 38 percent and 39 percent respectively.
The education level has increased mostly among immigrants from South America, but also among those from Africa, North America and Oceania. The number of highly educated immigrants has on the other hand decreased somewhat when it comes to emigrants from other Scandinavian and European Union countries. According to SCB, the levels of education differ greatly depending on country, age bracket and reason for immigration. Immigrant women are less educated, more so than men, while the opposite is true for those born in Sweden.
