Bracing against bad weather on the east coast

Forecasters warn more is on the way for Sweden.

  • Wind, storms and heavy rain hit Sweden's east coast hard on Sept. 21, with more rain expected to flood parts of the Baltic coast.
  • After a spell of summery September weather, eastern Sweden has been bracing itself against some persistent stormy and windy weather. Heavy rain and winds have left thousands without electricity, ferry service has been disrupted and fallen trees are blocking roads around the Swedish capital.

  • Less than a month after extreme rain caused flooding in Skåne in southern Sweden, thunder and lightning hit the east coast hard on Sunday, Sept. 21, with more heavy rain and high winds expected to flood parts of the Baltic coast, according to Swedish Meteorological and Hydrological Institute (SMHI) meteorologists. "There will be more persistent rain which then might not have time to drain away because the system is already filled with water," warned SMHI meteorologists.

  • On Monday, the wind blew over a 13-foot pole in Stockholm, hitting a woman in the head. She was transported in serious condition by ambulance to the hospital. Police report that she is now conscious and speaking.

  • "Autumn has arrived, and during the week temperatures will remain at around 50˚F in the south and 35-45˚F in the north. Uppland, Ökand and Gotland are expected to be worst affected by blustery winds." Meanwhile more snow is expected in northern Sweden, where residents were forced to get their shovels out on Sunday after the biggest snowfall this season.
