Northern Lights gifting Swedes with spectucular skies

  • An unusual amount of auroras have been treating stargazers all over Sweden lately. During this intense auroral period, areas even as far south as central Sweden have seen incredible displays of pulsating color across the night skies as the sun changes its magnetic north and south pole. This phase, when the sun is at its most active, can continue for a few years, according to Maria Sundin, astrophysicist and associate professor at the University of Gothenburg. Swedes and stargazers from all over have been out snapping photos of the aurora borealis, usually a famous feature of Scandinavian autumn and winter nights, though often difficult to spot anywhere other than in the far north. It’s very special for the sky to be lit up as far down as Stockholm and Gothenburg.
