  • The mandatory border control checks on trains, busses and ferries between Denmark and Sweden have come to an end after they were implemented in the beginning of 2016. Some suggest that means an increase in asylum applications is to be expected now that ID’s aren’t being checked; as of May 4, when the ID checks were stopped, 24 people sought asylum versus the average weekly amount of five people. Migrationsverket, the agency in charge of handling asylum requests and immigration in Sweden, says it’s too early to tell if the open borders are the cause for increased applications.
