Give peace a chance?

  • Give peace a chance?
Throughout the decades, Sweden was seen as a country that supported and approved the peace movement but as times changed and tensions between nations grew, the increase in military focus and support would also rise or fall depending on world events.

  • Now, some question whether the peace movement as first imagined is sustainable. Today, there's almost total political unity for a stronger defense, and closer proximity to NATO is mentioned more and more. As united as politicians were about disarmament in the 1990s, they all seem to be about armament and a stronger defense today.

  • The peace movement practically disappeared in the 1990s. Now, however, with what some perceive to be a serious threat from Russia as a reason to step up armament and military preparedness and long-time peace activists arguing against further increases in spending or activity, it seems that the peace movement is entering a new era.
