UN Security Council to convene in Sweden

The annual informal work session of the UN Secretary-General and the Security Council was held at Dag Hammarskjold's farm Backakra in southern Sweden. 

  • Dag Hammarskjöld's farm at Backåkra close to Ystad in southern Sweden was the late Secretary- General's summer residence.
  • The UN Security Council travelled to Sweden last weekend for its informal session with the UN Secretary-General.

  • The Security Council has five permanent members: China, France, Russian Federation, the United Kingdom, and the United States, and ten non-permanent members elected for two-year terms by the General Assembly of which Sweden is presently. Photo: Manuel Elias
  • The meeting was preceded by a visit to European Spallation Source, ESS in Lund, a unique material research facility based on the world's most powerful neutron source. In addition to the Secretary-General and Security Council members, Sweden's Prime Minister Stefan Löfven and Foreign Minister Margot Wallström participated in the informal work session on April 21.

  • UN Secretary General António Guterres continued to Uppsala on Sunday April 22, where he gave a Dag Hammarskjöld lecture at Uppsala Castle and later visited Stockholm.
