Fewer people die in traffic accidents. Not 'snaps' - Ginger cookies, just in time for the Christmas preparations. “Scenes from a marriage” on tour. Ohly and Sydsvenskan – Republicans of the year.

  • Fewer people die in traffic accidents
Fewer people die in traffic accidents in Sweden. In October this year, 24 persons died according to preliminary statistics from the Swedish Transport Administration. The average number of deceased in October during the last five years has been 32 and in 2009 it was 29. The reason behind this positive trend is believed to be the result of the lower speed limits during the last four years.

  • Ginger cookies
A good crunchy cookie just in time for the Christmas preparations. If you don’t like the taste of ginger, you can substitute it with cinnamon or even vanilla. It will put you in the mood for the upcoming holidays and you can bake it in advance and freeze. Ingredients: 200 g butter at room temperature, 2/3 cup sugar, 2 Tablespoons maple syrup, 1 ¾ cups flour, 2 Tablespoons vanilla, 2 teaspoons baking powder, 1 teaspoon ginger (or cinnamon or just leave out), 2 drops of water. Instructions: Preheat oven to 150 F. Mix butter and sugar and syrup until fluffy. Mix the dry ingredients separately and then add to the butter mixture. If you want to you can divide the dough in two and work them one by one on the table. If it’s difficult to keep the dough together, then add a few drops of water. Shape the dough into rolls, as long as the baking plate and put them on a baking plate, two and two (make sure you are using baking sheets). No need to flatten the rolls, they will flatten during the baking. Bake in oven for 13-15 minutes. Take them out and let them cool somewhat before you cut them into diagonal cookies.

  • “Scenes from a marriage” on tour
After 60 sold-out performances on Dramaten, it’s time for “Scenes from a marriage” to tour Sweden under RIksteatern’s direction. Ingmar Bergman-s “Scenes from a marriage” was enormously successful when it was shown as a TV-series in 1973 with actors Erland Josephson and Liv Ullman as leads. The plot focuses on a couple that seemingly is the perfect couple, but that privately is fighting big problems. The new version stars Jonas Carlsson and Livia Millhagen and the cities that they will visit are: Eskilstuna, Lund, Skövde, Kristianstad, Gävle, Umeå, Östersund, and Örebro. The tour will begin in March next year.

  • Ohly and Sydsvenskan – Republicans of the year
Lars Ohly, the current chairman of the Swedish Left Party, and the editorial staff at Sydsvenska Dagbladet, a daily newspaper in Sweden founded in 1848 and published in Malmö with its prime distribution being southern Sweden – are the recipients of this year’s “Årets republican”. The prize is awarded by Republikanska Föreningen (The Swedish Republican Association), a politically and religiously independent association that promotes the introduction of a republic government by democratic means. Ohly received the prize because “he is the only one of the Swedish political party chairmen who clearly shows he’s a republican”, while Sydsvenskan’s staff is described as taking a “marked stand for a monarch free state”.
The prize was awarded a short time after all of the headlines surrounding the release of the controversial book about the Swedish King: http://www.nordstjernan.com/news/people/2818/
